Cheerleading

The purpose of the cheerleading squad is to improve the overall collegiate athletic experience for students at HIU and to support the sports teams. The cheer squad works to enhance school spirit and school pride. Men and women of the cheerleading team are energetic, professional, fun-loving, and hard-working.

Cheer Team Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the tryout requirements?
A: We are looking for talented individuals who will represent our team and university in a positive manner.

Q: How many freshmen do you take?
A: There is no limit to the number of new or transfer students that we accept on the squad.

Q: How many individuals make the team?
A: 16 total

Q: Do you have a Varsity and Junior Varsity squad?
A: No, we do not have separate squads. Everyone cheers basketball season. The team will be broken into groups for home volleyball matches and home soccer games.

Q: Do you have an all girl squad?
A: At this time our team is comprised of men and women.

Q: Do you have a dance team?
A: While the cheer team primarily involves stunting, the female cheerleaders perform dance routines. The women on the team serve as both cheerleaders and dance team. We do not have a separate team for the sole purpose of dance.

Q: How much time commitment should I expect?
A: We generally practice four times a week for 2 hours. There are basketball games, volleyball games, soccer games, and special university functions that we attend. Depending on the talent and the team, we may compete. Competition will require extra practices. Cheerleading is a large time commitment that takes hard work and dedication.

Q: Are scholarships available?
A: Yes, cheerleaders are recruited and given scholarships.
