10/17/2007 - Mustangs Score Goals in Bunches, Hold Off Royals
Fullerton, CA- The Mustangs turned a beautiful fall afternoon into a GSAC loss for the Royals, 3-1. Hope's lone goal was scored by Sophomore Carlos Mesa-Gomez.
The old saying "Goals come in bunches" best describes the three goals scored by The Master's (8-3-3, 4-3 GSAC). They scored all three goals within a 10 minute time frame.
Andy Hegg opened the scoring in the 20th minute by heading in a corner kick off the foot of Joe Barnes. Two minutes later, Doug Harrell scored his first of two goals on the day when he took a pass inside the box from Justin Mohring and buried it into the back of the net. In the 30th minute, Harrell slipped behind the defense and out ran defender Matt Sanger to score his second goal.
Down 3-0 at halftime, Royals Head Coach Joe Lurker said the magic words to get his team fired up. Hope (8-7, 2-5 GSAC) came out firing on cylinders and controlled the first part of the second half. They were finally rewarded for their efforts when Senior Jeff Lucatero drilled a low shot that Mustangs goalkeeper Kevin Lawson originally saved. However, he left the rebound in front of the net and Mesa-Gomez knocked home the goal.
As with any game played between The Master's and Hope International, this match provided the winner with a leg up in the opportunity to advance to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) post season. With the win, the Mustangs have the edge in Men's Soccer.
The men will play their final home game of the season this Saturday (10/20) at 3pm versus Vanguard at Cal State Fullerton. For the two seniors- Jeff Lucatero and Karlin Ladera- this will the final time for them to wear their home whites.
