10/20/2007 - Royals Come Up Empty Against Lions
Fullerton, CA- On Saturday, the Royals squared off against the Vanguard Lions in a GSAC match. The Lions won 1-0 and scored their goal on a penalty kick in the first half.
In an evenly played match, the Royals (8-8, 2-6 GSAC) had their chances but could not finish. Both teams managed 6 shots with 3 on goal in the first half. In the second half, the Royals only managed two shots but also had their best chance to score. In the 75th minute, Freshman James Delaney beat Lions goalkeeper Trevor Herrera with a shot but instead of finding net- the shot found the post.
The lone goal was scored by Vanguard (9-5, 4-4 GSAC) in the 38th minute of the game after Royals defender Chris Key tripped up a Lions player in the box and Tomislav Colic hammered home the ensuing penalty kick.
Playing in their final home of the season, tribute was paid to the Royals two seniors- Jeff Lucatero and Karlin Ladera- by Head Coach Joe Lurker and their teammates. Ladera, who has been out all season with a leg injury, dressed and played in the first few minutes of the game. The Royals finish out their regular season on the road against soon-to-be #1 Azusa Pacific and #11 Fresno Pacific.
