1/28/2008 - Royals Finish Off Missouri Trip 1-2
Hope International traveled to Illinois and Missouri to finish of their season’s only road trip out of California. Sophomore Alex Figueriedo paced the Royals’ offense with 26 kills in one and a half matches.
In their first match in Illinois, the Royals met up with Graceland from Iowa at Quincy College on Sunday. Hope prevailed easily 3-0 (30-25, 30-23, 30-24). The Royals hit an impressive .316 as a team while holding the Yellowjackets just a .147 hitting percentage.
Figueriedo was the hitting star with 19 kills on 28 attempts with just 3 errors. Junior Rich Camerlengo helped the cause by pounding down 9 kills on 18 attempts and only 1 error.
With the win, the Royals climbed back up to the .500 mark (3-3).
Playing just a few hours later, Hope International squared off with the home team Quincy University. The Hawks defeated the Royals 3-0 (32-30, 30-23, 30-26). Though the loss was tough to shallow, the biggest loss came in the form of an injury. Figueriedo suffered a high ankle sprain in game 2 that will force him to miss a month or more of action.
Camerlengo knocked down 12 kills to help fill void left by Figueriedo. For the second match in a row, he had only one hitting error. Sophomore Cory Hindemit lead the team in hitting percentage (.600) by putting away 6 kills on 10 attempts with no errors.
The loss pushed the Royals record to 3-4 on the year. Quincy improved their record to 6-5 on the season.
Hope International traveled back to Missouri on Monday to play against Missouri Baptist. The Royals pushed the Spartans to four games before falling 3-1 (30-22, 24-30, 30-28, 30-26). Unfortunately at this time, there are no stats available for this match.
The loss dropped the Royals to 3-5. The Spartans remained perfect on the year with a 5-0 record.
After a long trip of battling talented volleyball teams and near freezing temperatures, the Royals return home to Southern California to play host to NCAA Division I Princeton from New Jersey on Friday (2/1). The match is scheduled for first serve at 7 pm inside the Darling Pavilion.
