3/15/2008 - Royals Lose Thriller
Fullerton, CA- On Saturday, Hope International and Cardinal Stritch played one of the most entertaining and compelling volleyball matches any crowd has ever seen. The Wolves came out on top of the Royals 3-2 (34-32, 30-24, 15-30, 29-31, 17-15). Four Royals finished in double digit kills with Sophomore Alex Figueiredo leading the way with 21 kills.
Neither team sent any records with their hitting percentage as the Royals hit .164 as a team while the Wolves hit just .131. However, they might have set records with their attempts as the Royals had a season high 159 attacks while the Wolves had 153.
Believe it or not, defense played a big part in the match as the teams combined for 84 digs and 34 blocks. Junior Nelson Hernandez finished with a match high 11 blocks (2 solo and 9 assists). Figueiredo led the Royals in digs with 10. The Wolves’ Libero Christopher Arquilla also finished with 10 digs.
Offensively, Senior Poyer Poia knocked home 15 kills. Junior Rich Camerlengo hit a team high .360 as he collected 14 kills on 25 attempts with just 5 errors. Junior Gary Ramirez added 12 kills.
Freshman Danillo Pereira dished out 53 assists.
Speaking of setters, the Wolves’ Stefan Stefanovic passed out 55 assists while spreading the ball around to 7 different attackers. His favorite target was Cristiano Mattita who finished with a match high 22 kills on 49 attempts.
Jacob Cosson had 11 kills and Mirko Jankovic pounded down 10 kills.
The Royals fell to 5-14 while the Wolves improved to 19-6.
The two teams will have little time to miss each other as they play again on Monday inside the Darling Pavilion at 7:00 pm.
