2/12/2008 - Cougars Wear Out Royals
Fullerton, CA- The Royals and Cougars went into overtime before deciding their GSAC game on Tuesday as the Cougars defeated the Royals, 79-65. Azusa Pacific out scored Hope International 18-4 in the extra session. Junior Stephanie Wenke hit the game tying shot to force overtime as part of her game high 22 points.
The Royals (14-12, 5-9 GSAC), who lead by as many as 11 points in the first half, appeared to be just plain wore out by the physicality and team speed of the Cougars (19-5, 11-3 GSAC).
Wenke hit 9 of 10 shots through regulation including a jumper with about 15 seconds to play to force overtime. In the overtime session, she was just 1 of 4 as the Royals made 2 field goals as a team.
Senior Jasmine Nault finished with 18 points- only the second time this season she has not finished with at least 20 points.
Though no other Royals had more than 9 points, Freshman Brittani Philbrook finished with a career high 8 assists.
The Cougars had 5 players end up in doubles figures lead by Abby Johnson’s 19 points. C.J. Hill also knocked down 18 big points.
APU shot 45.8 % as a team for the game but the difference in the game came from the free throw line. They hit 23 of 28 free throws versus the Royals going 14-18 from the line. They were a combined 20-21 from the line in the second half and overtime (including 13-14 in OT).
Johnson and Hill were a combined 14 of 15 from the charity stripe.
The Royals, losers of 4 in a row, will try and get back in the win column on Saturday as they travel down to San Diego to square off against San Diego Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm. The game will be available for the listening audience on Stretch Internet.
