9/29/2007 - Royals Suffer Tough Loss Against Westmont

Fullerton, CA- On a picture perfect Saturday, Hope lost to Westmont in a Golden State Athletic Conference match, 3-0. Two break downs as a team just before half time proved too much to overcome for the Royals.

The ladies threatened early but could not find the back of the net. Freshman Harmony Pruett put a shot on goal just 19 seconds into the match but Warriors Goalkeeper Roxanne Love, as she did all day long, was able to knock the shot away. The rest of the first half was rather uneventful until the final five minutes.

In the 40th minute, Westmont's Kayla Barkett played a high ball toward the box that became a jump ball between Hope Goalkeeper Ana Ahumada and Westmont Forward Amy Lawson. As Lawson flicked the ball into the net, Ahumada, attempting to punch the ball out, hit Lawson in the face- breaking her nose. Lawson is sure to remember that goal for awhile.

Westmont (5-4, 2-1 GSAC) took the air out of Hope (7-3-1, 1-2 GSAC) by scoring in the final minute of the half. After a throw-in bounced off a couple of players, Amanda Barret hit a shot from outside the box that found the nylon.

The Warriors scored their third goal on a through ball from Andria Carlson to Lindsay Milone in the 57th minute. However, even being down by three goals, the Royals continued to play hard through the final whistle. Freshman Clare Wohlfeil put two shots on goal late but turned away both times.

The Royals are next in action on the road at GSAC rival Cal Baptist in Riverside at 3pm on October 3rd.
