10/20/2007 - Royals defeat Lions 1-0
Fullerton, CA- The Royals defeated GSAC rival Vanguard on Saturday by the slimmest of margins, 1-0. Freshman Yvonne Aguilar scored the goal for the Royals.
Hope (8-6-2, 2-5-1 GSAC) made the most of their chances as they were out shot by Vanguard (8-4-3, 3-3-2 GSAC) 13 shots to 6 including 7 shots to 2 on goal. The Royals with stood the early barrage from the Lions as the Lions had five shots before the Royals picked up one. Of the first five shots, four could have easily scored as Royals goalkeeper Rebecca Dixon was forced to make two saves, the Royals picked up a team save, and the Lions hit the post.
After a scoreless first half, the Royals scored in the 74th minute. Senior Lisa Teberg, playing in her final home game as a Royal, slid a pass across the top of the box that Aguilar ran unto and buried into the back of the net. The goal was Aguilar's fourth of the season.
Ivana Mendez lead the offensive charge for the Lions with 3 shots (2 on goal) while Emelia Miller hit 2 shots (both on goal). Vanguard Goalkeeper Jillian Foss only had to make one save for the game.
Like Teberg, Jessica Sandoval, Marcy Herrera, Kandi Rodriguez, and Shuanna Drivdahl were all honored before the game as they played their last home game in a Royals uniform. The Royals finish out the regular season with two games on the road- at #2 Azusa Pacific and at Fresno Pacific.
