4/5/2008 - Cougars Dominate Royals

Buena Park, CA- The Royals had no answers for GSAC foe #21 Azusa Pacific on Saturday as they were swept 13-0 and 9-2. Freshman Cassandra Lewein and Allison Hofstetter were the only two Royals with multiple hits on the day.

Starting from the words “Play Ball” in Game 1, the Cougars came out firing on all cylinders and never looked back as they batted around and pushed across 5 runs in the first inning. They plated 4 runs in the second inning to put the game out of reach.

The Royals could not solve the pitching of Camille Hundley- who did not allow a hit in four innings of work. In fact, the only base runners she allowed came on a walk and a strike three wild pitch.

Hofstetter picked up the only base hit of the game for the Royals on the first pitch she saw from relief pitcher Sarah Moore leading off the bottom of the 5th inning.

Sophomore Sabrina Garcia struggled with her control throughout the game as she issued six walks- four of which that would eventually come around to score. She fell to 7-12 on the year with the loss.

Game 2 started much the same way as Game 1 for the Cougars as they sent 8 hitters to the plate with three scoring.

After allowing another run in the top of the second, the Royals show signs of life as they used three singles and a fielder’s choice to push across their first run of the day.

In the third, Hofstetter cut the Cougars lead in half as she lifted a bases loaded sacrifice fly to right field that drove in Lisa Teberg from third.

Unfortunately for the Royals, the Cougars answered in the fourth with three consecutive singles and a double to plate three more runs.

Sophomore Kelsea Mauerhan battled all day but still fell to 9-5 on the season.

With the losses, the Royals fall to 17-19 and 3-11 in GSAC. The Cougars improved to 19-18 and 9-5 in GSAC.

Next Tuesday, the Royals will travel to GSAC rival Concordia in Irvine for a 2:00 pm double header.
