4/8/2008 - Mauerhan Helps Own Cause, Royals Split with Eagles
Irvine, CA- Sophomore Pitcher Kelsea Mauerhan hit her first collegiate home run and allowed just three hits while leading the Royals to a 4-1 victory over Concordia in Game 2. The Eagles used extra frames to defeat the Royals 8-7 in Game 1.
The Royals and Eagles found themselves knotted at 6 after six innings of play in the first game. They both scored their six runs on the benefit of a 1 run inning, 2 run inning, and 3 run inning. The Eagles showed off their power as they hit two 2 run home runs. The Royals used a combination of timely hitting and aggressive base running to produce their runs.
Both teams went scoreless in the 7th and headed to extra innings. With the placed pinch runner put on at second, both teams sacrificed the runner to third and the next batter drove in the runner to make the game a 7-7 tie after eight innings.
The Royals left runners on the corners in the top of the ninth without scoring to setup the dramatic finish. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out and Tiana King singled to right to push across the winning run for the Eagles.
Sophomore Sabrina Garcia went the distance in the circle for the Royals but suffered the loss to fall to 7-13 on the season.
In the second inning of Game 2, Junior Stephanie Wenke doubled and Mauerhan singled her home- providing the eventual game winning run for the Royals. Mauerhan added an extra insurance run as she homered to lead off the fifth inning.
Mauerhan was dialed in from the pitching circle as well as she was throwing a perfect game for 5 and 2/3 innings before allowing a double. She would allow the Eagles’ lone run of Game 2 on a triple and single in the seventh. Mauerhan improved to 10-5 on the year with the win.
The Royals head to San Diego on Saturday to square off against GSAC rival #2 Point Loma Nazarene. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
