From October 10 – 13 two HIU students will be participating in the Security Council Simulation at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Juniors Jake Austin and Taylor Henderson will compete in two different committees alongside students from more than 30 national and international universities including Stanford University, Brown University, Cornell University, George Washington University and Princeton University.

For the past 35 years, the SCSY has been the premiere crisis-based Model UN conference on the college circuit. Combining innovative crisis committees with the extensive resources offered at Yale gives students the opportunity to engage in fascinating debate over a four day period.

The committees are broken into four categories: Historic, Traditional, Innovative, and Fictional. Austin will participate in the “Hunger Games Joint Cabinet Crisis,” taking the side of either The Capitol or District 13 as both battle for control of the country and its inhabitants. Henderson will participate on “Cloak & Dagger: Iran 1953,” where she will help rewrite Iran’s political history. 

Dr. Roberto Sirvent, Associate Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences, will accompany the two students as their adviser.

“As part of our Model United Nations program here at Hope, I have the privilege of sending students to two prestigious competitions: the Harvard National Model United Nations conference and the Yale Security Council Simulation,” Dr. Sirvent said. “These experiences play a critical role in broadening our students’ perspectives, at once challenging and affirming their call to serve the world that God loves.”
