Earning your Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Hope International University’s College of Education provides students state-approved professional preparation for a career in public & private K-6 elementary schools or self-contained classrooms through grade 12. HIU’s program features sound research training, a curriculum blend of theory and practice, and values-laden teaching from faculty with top academic credentials and real-world experience.

The teaching credential is offered online with Student Teaching on a designated campus for one semester.

During and following completion of the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, students will:

Students seeking the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential must meet the following requirements prior to student teaching: 

  • Basic Skills Requirement-Contact College of Education, Credential Analyst for specifics.
  • Subject Matter Requirement-Contact College of Education, Credential Analyst for specifics.
  • Fingerprint/Live Scan
  • CTC Certificate of Clearance 
  • CPR/First Aid Certification 
  • TB Test
  • Verify US Constitution Requirement 
  • 3.0 GPA in Graduate Level Courses 

Students seeking the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential must meet the following additional criteria prior to submission of application for a credential:

  • Passing score on Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) 
  • Passing score on the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA).

The Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program consists of the following course sequence:

  • EDU5625 Technology for Teacher – 3 units
  • EDU5640 Issues in Education during Middle Childhood and Adolescent Development - 3 units
  • EDU5820 Introductory Practicum for Elementary Teachers - 3 units

  • EDU5100 Foundations of Education - 3 units
  • EDU5330 Diversity: Language Acquisition and Methods - 3 units
  • EDU5340 Methods of Language Arts and Reading Instruction - 3 units
  • EDU5350 Methods of Mathematics and Science Instruction - 3 units
  • EDU5360 Methods of Integrated Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Schools - 3 units
  • EDU5410 Special Populations - 3 units
  • EDU5810 Student Teaching - 5 units
  • EDU5890 Advanced Student Teaching- 5 units
  • EDU5910 Student Teaching Seminar - 1 unit
  • EDU5911 Advanced Student Teaching Seminar –1 unit

CTC Accreditation

HIU’s Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). This additional professional accreditation supplements the university’s regional accreditation by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
