Housing: Non-HIU Students
Who are Non-HIU Students/residents?
Non-HIU students are those students attending colleges and/or universities other than Hope International University. Most often, these students attend California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and Fullerton College (FC).
HIU currently offers housing to select Non-HIU students upon an application and approval basis. As HIU is a Christian university and upholds Christian values and lifestyle, academically as well as socially, we approve Non-HIU applicants based on our determination of their desire and ability to be a positive active participant in this community.
How Does A Non-HIU Student Apply for Residence?
Any Non-HIU student desiring to live in the HIU community must first obtain the following documents:
- Non-HIU Resident Application Information form
- Residence Hall Housing Contract
- Pastoral Reference form
- Christian Involvement Evaluation
The Non-HIU Resident Application Information form should be read and followed, as it gives the applicant insight into the application process and other pertinent information.
Each applicant must complete and submit the Residence Hall Housing Contract and Christian Involvement Evaluation. The Pastoral Reference form must be given to the applicant’s pastor, youth pastor, spiritual mentor/discipler, etc. for completion and submission to the Housing Office.
Once all application documents have been received they will be reviewed by the Housing Office personnel. If it is determined through the application materials that the student may meet the approval requirements, he or she will be contacted to schedule an interview (preferably in person).
Not all applicants are guaranteed an interview.
The interview will be conducted by one of three individuals: The Director of Housing, the Director of Student Life or the Assistant to the Directors of Student Life and Housing.
In most cases, the applicant will be informed of the final decision regarding their application for housing at the conclusion of the interview.
Before official approval can be given, proof of academic registration must be submitted to the Housing Office. Each applicant must be registered for a minimum of 7 units/credits for the upcoming semester.
If You Are Approved for Housing at HIU
If the applicant is approved for housing, he or she must immediately schedule a time to meet with the Student Accounts Department in order to set up payment for housing.
The individual who informs the applicant of their approval will also ensure that the applicant knows the dates and times of move-in and all mandatory new-resident meetings.
General Housing Information
All rooms have private bathrooms with showers. All resident students are required to have a Bon Appetit meal plan to eat in the University’s Commons Dining Room. The meal plan is already packaged with the housing contract and is included in the housing costs. Please see the Residence Hall Housing Contract to see which meal plans you are eligible for.
No married or family housing is available on-campus. Numerous apartment complexes exist near the campus for those eligible to live off-campus.
Moving Off-Campus
All Non-HIU residents are eligible to move off-campus. If they choose to move off-campus they must complete a Release From Housing Contract 30 Day Notice form. Once completed, this form must be submitted to the Housing Office for approval 30 days (minimum) previous to the date, on which the resident plans on moving out.
Housing Extensions
If an HIU student resident is in need of a housing extension for either semester (meaning that they are moving out of the residence halls at the end of the semester, but need to stay after the pre-determined check-out deadline), they must apply for an extension by completing the Housing Extension Request Form and submitting it to the Housing Office by the indicated deadline. The ONLY Non-HIU individuals who qualify for housing extensions are:
- CSUF/FC student residents who are completing courses up to the day of their institution’s commencement day. These students may be approved to stay one day after their last final, (no later than commencement day).
- Approved students must pre-pay $10 for each day they will stay in the dorms past HIU’s commencement day.
Housing Renewal
Individuals who lived in the HIU residence halls during the 2008 spring semester and who would like to continue to live in the HIU residence halls for the 2008-2009 academic year must complete and submit a Residence Hall Housing Renewal Contract for the Full Academic Year, 2008-2009. Any student submitting a housing contract after May 1, 2008 will incur a $50 late fee, charged to their existing account.
Summer Housing
HIU does provide summer housing for HIU and Non-HIU students who have previously lived in the residence halls. Summer Residence Hall Contracts can be obtained from the Housing Office during the second half of each sprig semester. Summer housing is completely separate from the academic year housing and must be separately paid for. For summer housing prices contact the Housing Office.
