HIU Faculty & Students Visit Israel

HIU professors Dr. Joseph Grana, Professor of Biblical Studies for PCC, Dr. David Matson, Professor of Biblical Studies for PCC, and Dr. Curtis Holtzen, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Theology for PCC, led a team of 23 on a tour to Israel from January 6-15, 2010. The group included five HIU students and Hope’s own Human Resources Coordinator, Wende Holtzen.

A guided tour, led by an archeologist from Hebrew University in Jerusalem-Hillel Geva, took the group through significant sites in Israel such as Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth, and the Sea of Galilee. Highlights include seeing the 2000 year-old “Jesus Boat”, floating in the Dead Sea, taking a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee, and the baptism of Dr. Holtzen’s daughter, Roman, in the Jordan River. The team also visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Gordon’s Garden, both of which claim to be the place of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.

While there, Dr. Matson solidified a new study abroad opportunity for HIU students with the Nazareth Evangelical Theological Seminary. Beginning in fall 2010, HIU students will have the opportunity to study abroad in Israel.
