4/18/11 Fullerton, CA -Rotary Club of Fullerton Generously Supports HIU
The Rotary Club of Fullerton, a member of Rotary International, has been a long-time supporter and friend of Hope International University (HIU) and has once again donated funds to assist HIU in its service projects in the local community and internationally.
Rotary International is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Their motto is “service above self,” and members provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
HIU and Rotary International share core values including service to the community and world. Dr. Leroy Fulton, Senior Development Officer at HIU, who is an active member of the Rotary Club of Fullerton, stated, “I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Fullerton for many years, and it is a wonderful organization filled with men and women who are dedicated to the betterment of the city of Fullerton and the world.”
Five members of the HIU faculty and staff attended the club meeting on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, and Dr. Derry, President of HIU, delivered a presentation on the current happenings at HIU, including mention of the future land development called CollegeTown. CollegeTown will involve developing a new entrance to CSUF and HIU that will better connect the two Universities to the community and provide a new college environment where students, faculty and community members can live, work, shop, dine and play. Charles Kovac, Economic Development Project Manager for Affordable Housing in the City of Fullerton, was also present to answer questions about CollegeTown.
Also included in Derry’s presentation were sentiments on how HIU students and alumni are reaching out to the local Fullerton community in the lower-income areas through non-profit organizations like Solidarity. He pointed out that by Rotary supporting HIU students in their service project endeavors, they are ultimately serving and assisting the Fullerton community.
J.J. Peterson, Director of Campus Ministries at HIU, expressed his gratitude to the Rotary Club of Fullerton, “Because of the funds you are donating to the Hope, you are helping our students be able to spend their Spring breaks or their weekends on service projects in Tijuana, Mexico. Our students give of their time and money – we charge them to go and they still go – because they care more about making a difference in someone’s life than relaxing over Spring break. They are seeing homes built for families in Mexico, which literally changes that family’s future. Thank you so much for your generous support.”
