John Turek Named Athletic Director at Hope International
Hope International University is pleased to announce the hiring of John Turek as their new Athletic Director. Turek, a well known Fullerton sports figure, brings his wealth of knowledge to the Royals’ family after nearly forty years of educational experience including the last fifteen years as the Athletic Director of one of the finest high school sports programs in Southern California-Troy High School.
Under Turek’s tenure, the THS Warriors advanced to 29 CIF and/or State Finals while earning 12 Freeway League Boys and/or Girls “All Sport Champions”. The Troy Athletic Department consisted of 21 sports with usually more than one level per sport (Varsity, Junior Varsity, etc.), 800 athletes, and 95 coaches when Turek retired following the 2009-10 school year. For his efforts, he was named the 2010 Troy High School Educator of the Year.
Vice President of Student Affairs Mark Comeaux stated, “We look forward to John's leadership in our athletic department. He comes with a wealth of experience which will help us continue to provide a quality program and experience at our university.”
From the Fall of 1971 to the Spring of 1984, Turek taught History and Physical Education at three different schools (including two other high schools in the Fullerton Joint Unified School District). In the Fall of 1984, he made the move to Troy and never looked back spending the next twenty five years teaching Physical Education.
By 1986, Turek was given the role of Assistant Athletic Director-a title which he held for nine years. In 1995, he made the natural transition to Athletic Director which paid huge dividends for the Warriors. Known as a phenomenal academic institution (National Blue Ribbon School and perennial California Distinguished High School), Troy High School quickly became known as a superb athletic institution as well lead by Turek. In the 31 years prior to 1995, THS only advanced three times to CIF and/or State Finals while not receiving one All Sport Championship in the same time frame.
As common with people teaching Physical Education and working in the Athletic Department, coaching was also a huge part of Turek’s footprint in life. While trying his hand in the coaching of swimming, wrestling, and soccer, Turek really made a name for himself in football and track. In football, his teams recorded 155 wins (a Troy HS record).
Even though his teams won numerous league titles and made several playoff appearances, Turek stated that he was most proud of the way “our (Troy) athletic department had integrity, did the "right" things, and played with honor-win or lose.”
As for his new job as the Athletic Director at Hope International, Turek exclaimed, “I am excited about being able to work in Christian Service with the gifts that God has given me. I feel very fortunate that I have this opportunity.”
With Turek’s acceptance of the Athletic Director position, he becomes the seventh full time Athletic Director in Hope International University’s athletic history.
Educationally, Turek earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at California Western University in 1970. He doubled up with an Administrative Credential and Masters of Science with a Concentration in Secondary Education from California State University Fullerton in 1981.
John has been married to his wife, Jackie, for 42 years and they live in Fullerton. They have two grown child-a son and daughter-and five grandchildren that range in age from 1-7 years old. The Tureks have been active members of Friends Community Church in Brea for 8 years where John serves as the Clerk of the Congregation.
