Hope’s First Single Subject Teaching Credential Candidate Approved by CCTC

Hope International University (HIU) is proud to announce that McKenna Hamel is the University’s first Single Subject Teaching Credential candidate to be approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). Hamel graduated from Hope in 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Social Science, Secondary Education Preparation.

“I've been working in the public system for some time now,” she said in reference to the two years she has spent as a substitute teacher for Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, “and I have to say that HIU has equipped me well.”

Hope has offered a Multiple Subject Credential program since 1997 but the Single Subject has only been available since the Fall 2009 semester. Despite the pressure of pioneering the teaching credential program, Hamel was confident that the hard work would be worth it and she was thrilled to have the support of her mentor and professors. She went on to say that the program helps you understand how to exemplify Christ-likeness in an unbiased, public school setting. “So many educators today see California's dire current state as hopeless and bleak, but we understand that God is bigger than any budget cut and more powerful than any politician,” said Hamel.

When she was asked whether she would encourage other students to go through with the program, Hamel left no doubt of her opinion. “I would strongly recommend that students take advantage of the HIU single subject program if they have intentions of teaching at a middle or high school level,” she said. “I really felt cared for and loved within the program not just because of its small size but because the program claims Christ as its foundation.”
