Troy Gardner Named Director of Church Relations and Development

Hope International University (HIU) is pleased to welcome Troy Gardner as the new Director of Church Relations and Development. In addition to over ten years of experience in youth ministry in California, Gardner has also planted churches in McKinney, TX and Goodyear, AZ, and served as the Senior Pastor for six years at the latter church.

“I am very pleased to have Troy join the Institutional Advancement team at HIU,” Michael Mulryan, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at HIU, said. “Troy’s background, experience and enthusiasm for the position, definitely make him the right person at the right time for this position. As the University’s first full-time Director of Church Relations and Development, Troy’s hiring is the first major step in President Derry’s vision of being strategically involved and partnering closely with the Christian Church.”

Gardner feels that his extensive experience working as a church leader has helped him prepare for the responsibilities of his new position. “I’ve seen the need for great Christian leaders coming from a Biblically solid university,” he said. “So with the church side being my history, I want to do all I can to make sure HIU helps churches accomplish their mission.”

A native of Southern California, Gardner earned his B.A. in Biblical Literature from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO but has also stayed connected with HIU over the years. Many of his students from his time in youth ministry, such as Steve Carter (BA ’02), went on to graduate Hope and have become great examples of Christian leadership.

Acknowledging that HIU partners with amazing churches both locally and nationally, Gardner says he is looking forward to “growing relationships with some of the top leaders in God’s Kingdom, and doing what I can to help them.”

Having spent the past several years in Arizona, Gardner and his family are excited to return to California. “It’s like coming home,” Gardner said. His wife Lisa, who currently works as a junior high school music teacher, is looking forward to seeing what opportunities God provides for her and her family.

Troy and Lisa have been married for 21 years. They have two daughters, one who is a senior in high school and the other is in 7th grade.
