9/2/09 Fullerton, CA - La Rusch Named Women’s Volleyball Coach
Hope International University is pleased to announce the hiring of Steve La Rusch as the new Head Women’s Volleyball Coach effective immediately. Former Head Coach Victor Jennings-Santiago’s status changed due to a relocation requirement for his full-time job. With the season already underway, Coach La Rusch will lean heavily on his twenty years of volleyball coaching to find the winning formula for the Royals.
Athletic Director Aaron Siefker says, “We are very excited about adding Coach La Rusch to the Hope International University Athletics staff. Steve is a man of strong Christian character and vast volleyball knowledge.”
Coach La Rusch coached Men’s and Women’s Volleyball at Long Beach Polytechnic High School from 1990-2008. LBPHS is one of the premier athletic departments in Southern California and volleyball is no exception as they continually win Moore League titles.
Last year, La Rusch decided to make the step up to the college ranks and accepted an assistant coaching position at Cerritos College. The Falcons finished with a 9-14 record (6-8 in the South Coast Conference).
In the Royals, La Rusch inherits a team that has started the season 2-5 but is currently on a two match winning streak. Sophomore Naomi Iosia, who leads the Royals with 54 kills and played for Coach La Rusch at Long Beach Poly, will be a solid foundation to build on as La Rusch gets to know his new team.
Siefker added, “We look forward to success this season and many seasons to come.”
While spending every free moment putting his system in place, La Rusch will continue to teach at LBPHS in the Physical Education and Health Sciences Department- where he has taught since 1989.
Along with teaching, education has been important to La Rusch himself as he has a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University and Bachelors Degree in Physical Education from California State University Long Beach. He has also earned three Teaching Credentials- a Single Subject in Physical Education, a Designated Subject in Driver’s Education and Training, and a Special Subject dealing with Severely Handicapped.
La Rusch resides in Long Beach with his wife of 20 years, Nancy, and their two children- Sabrina (a volleyball player at Golden West) and John (a volleyball player at Long Beach Poly). The La Rusch family is active at Parkcrest Christian Church where Steve teaches the 4th and 5th Grade Sunday School class.
Coach La Rusch will make his HIU coaching debut this Friday as the Royals host Holy Names at 7:00 pm. The Royals open up Golden State Athletic Conference play by hosting Biola on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
