New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation (NSO) exists to help new students with their transition to the Hope Community. The Spring 2008 New Student Orientation activities will begin with Check-In on Tuesday, January 22nd at 8:00 a.m. and continue until classes begin on Wednesday, January 23rd. Download the Spring 2008 New Student Orientation Schedule.
The Spring Semester New Student Orientation program is designed to help students become familiar with the campus community before classes start. Orientation is also the time for new students to register for classes, test for Math and English placement and receive academic advisement. A number of activities and seminars are planned to prepare new students for their experience at Hope by exposing them to educational opportunities, helping them develop quality relationships, and encouraging them to access campus resources.
If you have any questions about New Student Orientation, please contact Katie Mae Stricker, Director of Student Programs and Retention, at (714) 879-3901 ext. 1292 or by email at nso@hiu.edu.

Check-In: All students must attend. Pick up your room key, mailbox combination, I.D. card and phone information. Also, you will receive information about health insurance and pay for your parking permit if you need one. After this process is completed you will have time to move in to your room if you will be living in the residence halls.
Business Office Pre-Clearance: If you were unable to clear all financial arrangements prior to arriving, you must do so before moving into the dorms.
Welcome Session: Let the President, Administration, and Student Affairs Staff welcome you to the University. During this session, students and parents will receive information about New Student Orientation.
College 101 - Family Reception: Come for a time of coffee, dessert, and discussion. While the new students are meeting with their Barnabas Groups, parents will have the opportunity to meet with the President, Staff, and Administrators.
Barnabas Groups: All students must attend. The "Barnabas Group" Peer Mentoring Program provides support and encouragement for all of Hope's new students. Students are assigned to a group of 10-15 new students who meet periodically with their Barnabas Group leader to interact and attend activities.
Church: There are many local churches in the area, in which we will provide more information upon arriving at Hope. For example, University Praise is a local church that meets Sundays on campus in the Pacific Auditorium.
Parent's Orientation & Closing Session: This time is set aside to give further information to families and allow for more in-depth questions and answers. Meet various campus personnel and gain a broader understanding of the services offered at HIU. The Closing Session ends the open activities for parents and is a time for the University to say thank you and goodbye.
Student Life Orientation: All students must attend this orientation. The President and Student Affairs Department will discuss student life policies and expectations for the entire Hope community.
Academically Speaking / Advisement Sign-up: All students are required to attend this session. Students will receive their degree audits, sign up for advising and receive other important academic information. You will meet faculty members and hear remarks from the Academic Dean.
HIU Community Fair: On-campus departments, local churches, and surrounding businesses will be on display for an all day community fair. Come and see the services offered by the University and local community. For students looking for a local church, bank, or other services, this would be a great time to do so.
Compass Placement Testing: All students must attend this testing. For registration purposes, this test determines which math and English classes students will need. There is check-in prior to this test with a list indicating those students who need to take the placement test. Students may not be required to take this test if they are transferring in college level math or English approved by the Registrar's Office.
College Student Inventory: All students are required to complete the College Student Inventory. The College Student Inventory is a questionnaire that provides ongoing comparative data to the university.
Academic Advisement: All students must attend. Students will meet with their faculty advisors to prepare for registration and choose classes for the semester.
Registration: All students must attend. Course registration will take place in the library. Financial clearance from the Business Office is required for Registration.
Federal Student Loan Workshop: All students receiving financial aid in the form of a Federal Student Loan during the 2007 - 2008 school year are required to attend this workshop. Students who are interested in the federal work-study program are also encouraged to attend. The federal work-study program provides tuition payment for on-campus student jobs. If a student qualifies for work-study, a job fair showcasing on-campus work will take place during the NSO week of events.
Social and Recreational Events: There will be a number of social and recreational events planned for you during New Student Orientation. Please refer to your schedule for times and locations. Attending these events is a great way to relax, meet other students and enjoy your first few days at Hope!
