Servant Leaders in Action: Ministry & Missions

Solomon Islands Pijin Bible Project

back

Bob (BA '82) and Amy Carter, have just celebrated twenty years of marriage and twenty years of ministry with Wycliffe Bible Translators. After having the privilege of studying Hebrew in Israel, Bob and Amy went to the Solomon Islands in 1997 to help the national church translate the Old Testament into the national language - Pijin. Out of more than 400,000 people in the country, there are over 25,000 mother tongue speakers of Pijin, and about 350,000 others who speak Pijin as a second language. Pijin is used in government and trade, and there is a growing interest in Pijin literacy and using it as a medium of education in the primary schools.

Since their arrival in the Solomons, the Carters have been working with nationals and others to draft and check the books of the Old Testament. In addition, Christian leaders in the Solomons have decided that the Pijin New Testament, which was published in 1993, needs to be revised. The tentative goal is for the Pijin Bible to be published sometime in 2007.
