Servant Leaders in Action: Ministry & Missions

Over 60 Years in India

back

One of the best known and most loved grads of Hope International University is Leah Moshier. Leah graduated from Pacific Bible Seminary in 1945, and in 1946 sailed with Dolly Chitwood (also an alumnae) to establish a missions work in Kulpahar, India. They purchased property and established the Kulpahar Kids Home and School. Their first year, they served 11 orphans and some school age children from the village.

By 1955, a new school building, new housings units and approval from local authorities for educational and medical activities had been provided for 65 children. By 1978, the mission boasted a full scale medical clinic with a resident doctor, nurses and modern equipment. Following Dolly Chitwood's death in 1995, Sharon Cunningham (also a PCC alumnae) was granted her unheard-of 5 year visitor's visa followed by a 10 year business visa to allow her to take over the management of the school.

Over 800 children have been saved from physical and spiritual death because of the ministry of Dolly and Leah and their coworkers. Today, some 150 children live at Kulpahar and almost 400 attend the school while the dispensary serves many patients each year.

As an expression of love and confidence in them and their service for God, Hope recognized both Leah and Dolly with Honorary Doctorate degrees in 1993.
