Advice to prospective students?
Your experience at Hope can truly be "life-transforming"! When you get into
studying & growing you begin to find out all kinds of things about God, His World & His Word that you have never seen before.
Many doors open to you through education process that just do not open any other way. You will find wisdom & relationships
to be productive and use the gifts God has given you to serve him in the Marketplace or Ministry. You will appreciate
Hope's commitment to provide a "Biblical World-view" for all subjects. For those in the Pacific Northwest you will especially
enjoy the convenience of our schedule and on-line options. Best advice is... Don't Delay!
How do you spend your free time?
I love my family, ministry, the outdoors, and sports. I especially enjoy going
fishing and hiking. Nothing provides a better way for me to relax than a week at the Oregon Coast with
my wife and/or family. I love reading and I have a hobby of studying people - they amaze me. I particularly love being able
to help people get to know Jesus and pastoring them. My wife, Lydia, and I have 3 adult children (Bethany 27, Bryce 24, and Jennifer 22).
Two of my kids are recently married so we are enjoying a growing family.

Counselor Name: Valynthia "Val" Herbert

Serving: Undergraduate and Graduate admissions in the Puget Sound area
Advice to prospective students?
It is exciting to further your education and know your future will be different because of that decision, whether it is personal or professional growth. When I am a student, I look at the classroom as my classroom and the environment as one that I can shape. So, take ownership of the whole educational process from daily assignments to final exams. When it is yours, you will get so much more from your education. Also, as an alumnus and a representative of HIU, I feel confident the Christ-centered education gives HIU students strong tools and a servant’s heart to face today’s world.
How do you spend your free time?
I volunteer in many places: Sunday school and Marriage Mentoring at my church, a pregnancy center, and a local counseling organization. Connecting with my three grown daughters and their families long distance is challenging, but it is also a very important activity. This fall, I will begin my Master degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Finally, when there is nothing else to do, my husband and I hike around the local mountain trails.
