4/27/10 Fullerton, CA - New Deans Assume Leadership Roles in University Restructure
On Friday, April 23, 2010, Dr. Paul Alexander, Vice President for Academic Affairs, announced the appointment of five new Deans and one Associate Dean for the new Colleges of Hope International University.
The new Colleges, announced in February, 2010, are under development and will be implemented in Fall 2011. These changes will lay the foundation for adding new programs, enhancing existing majors, and introducing the latest online technologies. The new Colleges will include both undergraduate and graduate programs ensuring strong coordination and sharing of resources.
The five Deans are: Dr. Joe Grana, College of Ministry and Biblical Studies, Dr. Steve Edgington, College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Laura Steele, College of Psychology and Counseling, Dr. George West, College of Education, Dr. Jim Woest, College of Business and Management, and Dr. David Timms, Associate Dean of the College of Ministry and Biblical Studies.
Dr. Paul Alexander states, “I could not be happier with the way this team has come together. They are the right people at the right time for Hope. I am convinced that God has assembled this team to help us move into the future with confidence and strength.”
Dr. Joe Grana, Dean of the College of Ministry and Biblical Studies, has devoted 23 years to Pacific Christian College as both Chair of the Church Ministry Department and as Professor of Preaching, Bible, Theology, and Leadership. Additionally, Dr. Grana has extensive experience working with churches in leadership, growth, preaching, pastoral care, and overall care for the church.
Dr. Steve Edgington, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has worked at Hope International University since 1980 in a variety of roles including Academic Dean of Pacific Christian College, Professor of History, and other faculty positions. He has served as Dean since 2004 providing leadership and oversight of the undergraduate school of HIU.
Dr. Laura Steele, Dean of the College of Psychology and Counseling, has been with HIU since 2002 when she came in as Chair of the Department of Psychology and Counseling for the School of Graduate and Professional Studies. She also served as Director of Hope Counseling Center, a center based on HIU’s Orange campus that provides counseling services to the campus and Fullerton communities. Under Dr. Steele’s leadership, the MFT department received accreditation from the national accrediting body, the Commission of Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education in 2009. Dr. Steele also has extensive experience in private practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist, in social work, and as a clinical psychologist.
Dr. George West, Dean of the College of Education, has over 40 years of extensive experience in educational leadership and has been in leadership with HIU since 2001 as both the Chair of the Education Department with the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, and as a Professor of Education. He has spearheaded the formation of many new educational programs in his time with HIU, including the M.A. in Educational Administration, the Single Subject Credential, and the Gifted and Talented Education master’s and certificate, and has been instrumental in developing online instruction.Dr. Jim Woest, Dean of the College of Business and Management, has been with Hope since 1994 when he began as Associate Director of Advancement. He then went on to serve as Chair of the College of Business and Management for Pacific Christian College. Dr. Woest holds over 20 years of experience in upper management positions in the business world, and has extensive teaching experience in business and management subjects.
Dr. David Timms, Associate Dean of the College of Ministry and Biblical Studies has been the Chair of the Ministry Department for the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at HIU since 2001, as well as Professor of the New Testament and Theology. Dr. Timms has been a pastor and professor across the U.S. and in Australia for over 30 years. He also headed up the program review and redesign of the Graduate Ministry program in 2001. Dr. Timms is a regular presenter at workshops, camps, conferences, and church services, and authors numerous articles and books annually.
