Position Information

Position: Full Time Faculty in Communication

Organizational Relationship: Reports to the Associate Dean and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Position Status: Exempt, Full-time Faculty

Position Summary:

This is the lead faculty position in Communication at the Bachelor’s degree level. The position is scheduled to begin in June 2022. This renewable full-time position is structured as 30 faculty “load units” (the sum of teaching and administration units) for each academic year.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teaching

During the year (two semesters) 7-8 courses will be taught (21-24 faculty load units annually). The repertoire of courses to be taught could include: Public Speaking, Introduction to Oral Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Critical Thinking and Argumentation, Communication Internship and selected upper division Communication courses.

  • Administration

Communication program administration, including support and management of adjunct instructors, course scheduling and budget planning with the CAS Associate Dean.

Participation in assessment of student learning outcomes for improving student learning for Program Learning Objectives in Communication. (4-6 faculty load units per year).

Leadership in the planning and implementation of a Bachelor’s level Communication program design.

  • Academic Advising

Advising undergraduate Communication students (2-3 faculty load units per year)

Education/Experience: Candidates who have earned a Ph.D. in Communication are strongly preferred. Secondary preference will be given to candidates who are ABD or enrolled/in progress in a Ph.D. program in Communication. Candidates should be able to cite and demonstrate teaching ability and experience.


Knowledge and Skills: Computer skills and experience required. Preference for experience using Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with Learning Management Systems required (Canvas preferred).


Mental Demands: Must be able to manage and prioritize teaching load responsibilities, student advising responsibilities, and program administration responsibilities.

Visual Demands: Extensive use of computer screens, evaluation of student work, assessment of student learning, as well as composition, editing, and evaluation of various other work-related documents.

Physical Demands: Long intervals at keyboard and monitor. Conveying instructional materials to and from the classroom. Demonstrations for instructional purposes may require corresponding physical movements.

Environment: Service-oriented instructional role in an institution of Christian higher education. Extensive contact with faculty colleagues, staff, students and the general public in person and often by phone or email.

Character: Candidates should be able to articulate and demonstrate mature Christian Faith, in part through commitment to a local Christian church, and embrace the mission of Hope International University.
