Position Information

Organizational Relationship: Reports to the Athletic Director

Position Summary: Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Head Coach(es) for Men’s and/or Women’s Wrestling is responsible for developing intercollegiate wrestling teams. Responsibilities include the overall successful development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Men’s and/or Women’s wrestling program. Specifically, the Head Coach will develop and conduct in-season training and instruction, recruit student-athletes, assist with the academic success of the student-athletes, manage the program’s fiscal budget, provide mentoring and Christian discipleship, and supervise assistant coaches.

As a member of the HOPE Athletic Department, each coach must be committed to supporting the sound educational process, establishing traditions, promoting Christian values, and developing greater maturity in Christ for the Royals Athletic Department and the HOPE community.  Each coach is accountable for his/her actions, expressed in all personal and professional relationships that the coaching position provides, and must carry out the mission, vision, and core values of the University. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Secure a facility and the necessary equipment to launch an intercollegiate wrestling program.
  • Recruit student-athletes that reflect the values and admissions standards of HOPE. 
  • Coach your team to win.  However, the development of character in the Christian student-athlete is more important than winning.
  • Conduct your practices in a manner that reflects professionalism, a Christ-like witness, and a concern for the total welfare of the student-athlete, including their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development.
  • Discuss annual budget needs with the Athletic Director for their sport including equipment, meals, transportation, and facility rental.
  • Organize an annual balanced schedule, meaning equal number of home and away games; schedule games with coaches from other colleges; submit schedules to the Athletic Director for approval and distribution of contracts.    
  • Submit the names of all student-athletes to the Compliance Officer to begin the process of eligibility certification.
  • Deliver quotes for all equipment to the Athletic Director (AD)
  • Ensure that all athletes have a completed physical on file in the Athletic Trainer’s office before the first practice in their sport.
  • Complete a travel schedule itinerary and submit transportation request forms for all away matches.
  • Check practice facilities at the conclusion of each practice or contest for equipment pick-up and facility cleanliness.
  • Store equipment appropriately, so it is available for the next practice, game, or season.
  • Communicate with the AD about your dreams, plans, hopes, concerns, problems, and needs of your sport.  Avoid having the AD surprised about anything in your program.
  • Warn your athletes that there are inherent risks in participating in intercollegiate sports.
  • Arrange and supervise community outreach opportunities for your team.  Minimum of one on-campus and one off-campus event per academic year.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s recommended. Coaching or teaching experience in higher education is desirable. Recruitment experience in the Southern California region is highly desirable.

Knowledge and Skills: Understanding of laws that apply to intercollegiate athletics. Accounting principles. Sport Psychology background. Maintain records. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Budget control for sport. Basic computer knowledge. Able to function moderately within established job responsibilities and parameters. Able to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Able to operate well in a “busy” environment where multiple activities may be occurring at one time.

Mental Demands: Remain positive amid stressful situations. Ability to work well with people. Ability to express ideas clearly to staff and athletes. Maintain confidence in abilities. Remain flexible.

Visual Demands: Use of computer monitor.

Physical Demands: Able to lift, grasp, stoop, and carry up to 30 pounds.

Environment: Very busy, team-oriented, fast-paced environment. Extensive contact with students, faculty, and staff, both in person, by e-mail, and via telephone.

Character: Must have a vibrant and authentic Christian faith and worldview, embody Christian character, and be actively involved in a local church.
