Position Information

Organizational Relationship: Reports to the Director of Athletics

Position Summary:
The Head Men’s & Women’s Golf Coach is responsible for directing, organizing, and administering all aspects of the University’s men’s and women’s golf programs in alignment with the mission, vision, and core values of Hope International University. This position emphasizes fostering a Christ-centered environment that supports the academic, spiritual, and athletic development of student-athletes. The coach is responsible for recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes, developing competitive teams, ensuring compliance with institutional, conference, and NAIA regulations, and promoting a positive image of the program both on campus and in the community.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Program Leadership & Coaching
    • Develop and implement effective practice plans, training programs, and competition strategies to maximize student-athlete performance
    • Provide Christ-centered mentorship, emphasizing character, integrity, and sportsmanship
    • Oversee all aspects of team travel, including transportation, lodging, and meal arrangements
  • Recruitment & Retention
    • Identify, evaluate, and recruit student-athletes who demonstrate the ability to succeed academically and athletically at HIU
    • Develop relationships with high school coaches, club programs, and golf communities to promote HIU golf
    • Maintain roster sizes that meet or exceed department goals
  • Compliance & Administration
    • Ensure adherence to all University, conference, and NAIA rules and regulations
    • Submit and maintain all required team, player, and recruiting documentation
    • Coordinate schedules, contracts, and officials for all competitions in collaboration with the Director of Athletics
  • Player Development & Support
    • Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and collaborate with campus resources to promote success
    • Encourage student-athletes’ involvement in service projects, campus activities, and community engagement
  • Budget & Fundraising
    • Manage the program budget responsibly in accordance with department guidelines
    • Organize and participate in fundraising efforts to support program needs, including equipment, travel, and facility enhancements
    • Cultivate relationships with alumni, donors, and sponsors to strengthen program support.
  • Public Relations & Community Engagement
    • Represent HIU and the golf programs at university events, community activities, and alumni functions
    • Promote the program through social media, marketing initiatives, and public speaking engagements
    • Maintain positive relationships with local golf courses, training facilities, and industry partners.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Maintain an inventory of all golf program equipment and uniforms
    • Assist with departmental events and initiatives as assigned by the Director of Athletics
    • Serve as a visible leader on campus, fostering school spirit and supporting other athletic programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching competitive golf at the collegiate, high school, or club level
  • Strong understanding of NAIA rules and compliance requirements
  • Proven ability to recruit, mentor, and develop student-athletes
  • Commitment to integrating faith and sport in a Christ-centered environment
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel

Employment Standards:

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of 2-3 years of coaching experience at the collegiate or competitive club/high school level, preferably with both men’s and women’s teams

Knowledge: Strong technical and tactical knowledge of golf instruction and competition. Understanding of player development, training principles, and tournament preparation. Knowledge of recruiting strategies and NAIA compliance requirements. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and basic use of sports management/recruiting software.

Skills: Ability to effectively plan, organize, and run practices and competitions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Capable of functioning independently within established goals and expectations. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Mental Demands: Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in high-pressure situations. Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, demonstrate sound judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

Physical Demands: Able to lift, grasp, stoop, and carry up to 30 pounds, as required. Able to use a hand-truck.

Visual Demands: Use of a computer monitor. Proofreading.

Environment: Dynamic, fast-paced athletic environment with extensive contact with students, parents, faculty, and staff. Frequent travel for recruiting, tournaments, and team activities.

Character: Must have a vibrant and authentic Christian faith and worldview, embody Christian character, and be actively involved in a local church
