Position Information

Position Summary: We are seeking a dedicated custodian at Hope International University. This role is essential in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our students, faculty, and staff. The custodian will play a vital part in supporting our mission by ensuring that our facilities are well-kept and conducive to learning.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform general cleaning and related housekeeping service functions
  • Maintain custodial supply areas and equipment
  • Clean and service restrooms
  • Ensure custodial standards are met and maintained
  • Maintain safe and secure areas
  • Report maintenance problems and malfunctioning equipment to the manager
  • Dust furniture and maintain the cleanliness of university offices
  • Sweep, scrub, vacuum, and mop floors
  • Clean windows, window blinds, and walls
  • Replenish restroom supplies
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles
  • Clean white and black classroom boards
  • Clean restrooms, elevators, stairwells, and other facilities assigned
  • Clean and disinfect student dormitories
  • Clean and sanitize high-touch areas
  • Observe safety hazards and equipment defects
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for events and meetings as required
  • Train other custodians or other employees on specific skills and tasks required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager

Employment Standards:

Experience: Six months of custodial experience is required

Knowledge and Skills: knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment such as vacuum, wet/dry vacuum, and carpet extractor; hi-speed floor machine 1500 rpm; side-by-side floor machine 700 rpm; ability to conduct job training with student workers

Mental Demands: self-directed, proactive, and able to take the initiative; highly organized, detail- and multi-task oriented; able to set priorities and responsibilities; competent in problem-solving; able to deal effectively with a variety of personalities and various cultural backgrounds; able to follow oral/written instructions and complete tasks effectively within a designated time frame

Visual Demands: extended computer monitor viewing and reading

Physical Demands: able to perform manual tasks requiring moderate strength using equipment/machinery as listed above and to stoop, kneel, reach, pull, grasp, and climb

Environment: varying pace from moderate to very busy, service-oriented, multi-cultural; extensive contact with students, prospective students, staff, faculty, and the general public; subject to hazards of machinery, equipment, and exposure to cleaning chemicals; conditions could affect skin or respirator systems (fumes, odors, dust, or poor ventilation); may need to occasionally perform tasks in high heat or cold conditions

Character: must embody Christian character and be actively involved in a local church
