Position Information

Organizational Relationship: Reports to the Head Coach

Position Status: Non-exempt, seasonal, part-time (10-15 hours per week)

Compensation: $10,000 Stipend

Position Summary: The Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach plays a critical role in supporting the vision, mission, and daily operations of the HIU Women’s Basketball Program. As part of the Royals Athletics Department, this individual is expected to model Christian character, uphold academic and athletic integrity, and contribute to the holistic development of student-athletes physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The Assistant Coach is instrumental in reinforcing team culture, executing game plans, and helping to shape a Christ-centered athletic experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head Coach in all aspects of practices, games, and team operations
  • Be present and engaged at all team practices, film sessions, meetings, and competitions
  • Support player development through on-court instruction, individual skill work, and mentoring
  • Recruit prospective student-athletes who align with HIU’s Christian mission and academic standards
  • Help monitor academic progress and spiritual growth of student-athletes
  • Uphold program standards of discipline, accountability, and sportsmanship
  • Help prepare scouting reports and game strategies
  • Assist with game-day responsibilities including warm-ups, bench management, and in-game adjustments
  • Coordinate logistics for team travel, including submitting itineraries and travel requests in collaboration with the Head Coach
  • Ensure compliance with NAIA and institutional policies and procedures
  • Communicate consistently and effectively with student-athletes, staff, and the Athletic Director
  • Assist in the organization of team community service efforts (minimum one on-campus and one off-campus initiative per academic year)
  • Help manage inventory, storage, and maintenance of basketball equipment
  • Contribute to a positive team culture that reflects the values of humility, integrity, and competitive excellence
  • Serve as a Christ-like role model on and off the court

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree preferred. Previous playing and/or coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level required (collegiate playing experience strongly preferred). Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, and game preparation. Understanding of Christian higher education and a desire to work in a faith-based environment.

Knowledge and Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Commitment to academic and athletic excellence. Ability to maintain a Christ-centered culture while pursuing competitive success. Organizational and administrative skills to support scheduling, travel, and recruiting. Ability to relate to and mentor young women in their college years. Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required. Must be eligible to drive university vans with student-athletes.

  • Mental Demands: Remain positive amid stressful situations, ability to work well with people, ability to express ideas clearly to staff and athletes, maintain confidence in abilities, and remain flexible
  • Visual Demands: The visual ability to read hard copy and computer-generated reports, including numbers and letters, as well as University publications.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to stay on the court for 3 hours during a practice or game.
  • Environment: Very busy, team-oriented, fast-paced environment; Must be able to maintain confidential information; Extensive contact with students, lenders, other outside agencies, faculty, and staff; May require some late hours and weekends.
  • Character: Must embody Christian character and be actively involved in a local church.
