Organizational Relationship: Reports to Vice President for Business & Finance

Position Status: Full-time, Exempt

Position Summary: Hope International University seeks an experienced financial leader to serve as Controller. The Controller will serve as a senior leader in the Accounting and Finance operations of the university and oversee financial reporting and analysis, general accounting functions, accounts payable, and cash flow projections and analysis. The Controller will supervise the annual audit function, assist with the preparation and execution of the University budget, prepare and file internal and external financial reporting and tax filings, and prepare and analyze financial Key Performance Indicators.

Reporting to the Vice President for Business and Finance/CFO, the Controller oversees an experienced accounting and finance team of four. The Controller will have the opportunity to analyze, assess and provide recommended solutions for resource allocation, budgeting, and best practices across all University financial operations. Key deliverables for the Accounting and Finance Department of the University are: producing timely, accurate and complete financial statements with analysis against established budget and strategic objectives; providing key input to the institutions’ annual budgeting, financial reporting and compliance processes; and monitoring and advising on investments and financial and strategic initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee timely and accurate monthly financial statements with adherence to month-end close schedule.
  • Oversee and review monthly list of Budget to Actual variances for Financial Statement Preparation.
  • Review weekly cash flow worksheet and provide input to CFO.
  • Monitor departmental adherence to the approved budget and follow up with department managers as needed.
  • Prepare Financial KPI including Financial Ratios, DOE Composite Score Trends, Allocation of Resources, and other financial data requested for the University Fact Book.
  • Review vendor aging weekly and provide Accounts Payable Clerk with selection of vendor payments.
  • Approve purchase orders, check requests and employee expense reports and verify available budget.
  • Oversee the accounting for various restricted funds such as Federal, Cal Grant, endowments, trusts and annuities, and temporarily restricted donations.
  • Provide vacation coverage for the Federal fund drawdowns, and online banking activities.
  • Oversee and analyze the development of Cost Models for existing departments and programs in addition to new, proposed programs, to demonstrate the financial viability of the University’s Colleges.
  • Supervise and participate in preparation of the annual independent audit as well as assisting the auditing staff.
  • Prepare and/or oversee preparation of various federal, state, county, and other agency filings such as the annual 990, 990T, 571-L, IPEDS, and Department of Education E-Z Audit.
  • Work with the budget and review team in the preparation of the University budget. Maintain the Master Budget spreadsheet and insure the reconciliation of it with the Departmental Budget spreadsheets and the accounting software.
  • Assist the Vice President for Business and Finance in interpreting financial reports to all levels of Management.
  • Strive to meet the financial strategic objectives set for the University.
  • Supervise the Staff Accountant, Payroll Manager, and Accounts Payable Clerk positions including administering annual performance appraisals.
  • Select and maintain qualified personnel in all positions reporting directly or indirectly to theController.
  • Complete or assist with other projects and duties as assigned.

  • Education / Experience: Bachelor of Arts degree in Business with an emphasis in accounting, finance or business administration is required. Advanced Business Degree preferred. Supervisory experience in accounting and finance of ten years or more is required.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Must have knowledge of the Principles of Fund Accounting and consolidated financial statement preparation, familiarity with tax and report filings as noted above. Must have strong working knowledge of Word and Excel as the University is standardized on Microsoft Office, as well as sound computer experience with financial software and ERP systems. Experience with Campus Management software a plus. Must have experience with standard office procedures and equipment. Excellent telephone and interpersonal communication skills are necessary as well as the ability to maintain confidential information. Must be able to effectively develop correspondence and write clear and concise reports in English in a timely manner.
  • Mental Demands: Ability to function consistently in multi-task mode. Problem-solving and prioritization skills essential. Self-directed, detail oriented, and able to concentrate within modular office surroundings. Ability to prioritize responsibilities and adapt to changes.
  • Visual Demands: Must have adequate visual endurance and acuity to handle all accounting duties including proofreading. Extensive computer use
  • Physical Demands: Extended intervals at a computer keyboard. Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds. May require climbing stairs and walking to various offices on campus.
  • Environment: Fast pace in a private office. Extensive contact and coordination with all levels of university employees as well as the general public requiring exemplary customer service skills. Periodic attendance at events beyond the normal workday required.
  • Character: Must embody Christian character and be actively involved in a local church.
