Longtime HIU Royals Men’s Basketball Coach, Bill Czech, recently was interviewed on the Character Up podcast, which features stories and discussions on leadership and character across high school, college, and professional sports. Coach Czech shares personal stories of how his faith has been challenged and grown, and how his team supported him through some extremely difficult times.

“Now in his 12th season as men’s basketball coach at Hope International University, Bill Czech has experienced a year unlike any other. With a basketball schedule that, like so many other aspects of our lives currently, defines uncertainty, Bill has a profound perspective on the importance of getting closer to Christ as safety protocols and recovery from his battle with COVID-19 have gotten him further from being on the hardwood with his team. Bill has dealt with personal tragedy and loss in a way that will truly inspire you and has inspired his players to do something that will impact others.”

Czech has taken the Royals' program from a perennial last-place finish in the GSAC to one of the top-flight programs in the NAIA. The Royals were getting ready to leave for Kansas City to compete for a National Title before the abrupt ending to the season, due to COVID19, which would have been Coach Czech's ninth postseason appearance.
