Graduate Ministry Program: Onsite Seminars & Simulcast

Leadership & Finances; Reading for Spiritual Formation

Jan 17, 2019 08:00 AM - Jan 19, 2019 06:00 PM

HIU's Fullerton Campus (simulcast sites in NE, MN, and TX)

Overview

Each year, HIU's ministry graduate students gather together on the Fullerton campus for intensive onsite learning opportunities (with simulcast sites in Papillion, NE; Rochester, MN; and Dallas, TX). While our program is geared toward online learning, there is nothing better for fostering community and networking than spending a few days together, face-to-face. The 2019 Onsite Seminars offer two back-to-back 3-unit classes, each a day and a half long. Students may choose to attend one or both classes. For detailed daily schedules, see images below.

PART ONE, Jan 17-18: "Leadership & Finances"

As Christian leaders, we are called to be good stewards of what God has granted us. This stewardship extends from our personal resources to those in our ministry. Guest speakers will include church and finance gurus looking at biblical foundations, exploring tax benefits available for pastors, providing best practices for managing church budgets, offering insights into running non-profits, and developing a culture of generosity.

Guest speakers will include church and finance gurus, including Enrolled Agent and Certified Financial PlannerTM Kari Pel, Professor Andrew Paine, Executive Pastor Dale Borgen, Lead Pastor Scott Martin, Lead Pastor Mike Goldsworthy, and nonprofit Executive Director Kevin Mo-Wong.

Day One (Thursday, January 17) includes a luncheon hosted by Dr. John L. Derry, President of Hope International University. Dr. Derry has authored articles in professional publications and presented seminars and workshops nationally and internationally on various topics relative to Christian ministry, globalization, and higher education.

PART TWO, Jan 18-19: "Reading for Spiritual Formation" (not offered in MN)

We all need to eat. But there is a difference between drinking a protein shake and sitting down for a nutritious meal. While the Bible provides us spiritual nourishment, can we learn how to take the time to truly savor God’s word? We need to let it sink in and saturate our lives, so that our reading of Scripture becomes an encounter with our living God. We want our heads, hearts, and hands to be transformed by reading Scripture. We want to savor God’s Word and come away satisfied.

Our special guest lecturer, Dr. Jan Johnson, is a premiere expert on spiritual formation. Holding degrees in biblical studies and Christian spirituality, she has written twenty-three books, including Enjoying the Presence of GodWhen the Soul Listens, and numerous magazine articles. She is also a frequent retreat and conference speaker. She writes about spiritual formation, partnering with God in caring for the voiceless, and living with purposeful intentionality.
