Business as Mission

Name: Luke and Tawny P.

Current Status: Alumni

Graduation Year: 2011 & 2012

Luke and Tawny P. (last name removed to protect individuals' safety in overseas missions) lead an adventure tourism business on an island in Southeast Asia. The operation is based on the Business as Mission concept brought to HIU by Professor Neal Johnson and designed to provide students with the skills to be able to integrate their faith with their business efforts.

Their adventure tourism business provides the opportunity to engage with a population that is greater than 99% Muslim. Each year, the business team partners with short-term volunteers and volunteer groups from churches and colleges, all of whom share the team’s passion to represent Christ.

On a typical day, the team leads morning tours in surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, rock climbing, spearfishing, and trekking. After lunch, they visit local villages, where they are frequently invited into homes, leading to opportunities to share their faith over coffee and conversation. During their international experience, volunteers also learn to adapt the team’s methods so they can share their faith more effectively at home.

Only a few years after graduation, Luke and Tawny embody the mission of Hope International University as they interact with local villages and people from around the globe.
