Someday is Today

Name: Robbie Phillips

Current Status: Alumni

Graduation Year: 1991

Robbie Phillips (’91) has joined the faculty of the Pacific Christian College of Ministry and Biblical Studies as the Chair of Church Ministry, Professor of Biblical Studies.  He was introduced to Christ and then-Pacific Christian College by PCC alumnus Dean Mathis (’80), who served at East Tennessee State University, where Robbie enrolled as a freshman.

He later transferred to PCC, where he met his wife, Leanne (’92). Robbie said that his favorite class was Theology of Ministry, which he is now teaching at HIU.

“I learned a healthy theology that leads to optimistic servanthood,” he recalled, “and I can hardly wait to help instill confidence in students so they can use theology to shape their places of service.

He is excited to serve in the classrooms of faculty mentors like Dr. Joe Grana and Dr. Knofel Staton, and HIU leaders are excited to have him on campus.

“Robbie Phillips is a remarkable leader and scholar. He will bring to our men and women preparing for ministry his remarkable breadth of experience in a variety of Christian Churches on the West Coast and the East Coast,” said Dr. Paul Alexander, HIU President.   “Robbie is a scholar, but, more importantly, a Church leader who understands personally the importance of both theology and practical training. I know our faculty are thrilled to have this Royal alum back in the fold.”

Robbie and Leanne maintained relationships with HIU and its alumni.  That ongoing connection meant that Robbie learned about the opportunity at the University just as an interim ministry position was coming to an end.

“In the back of my mind, there was always a thought that I would teach one day,” he said.  “I realized that ‘someday’ is today, and the timing was perfect. Now, I get to help students receive what I did: a strong, healthy, biblical education that has an organic connection to servanthood.”

Robbie and Leanne live near the campus, in Placentia, with their daughters, Maggie, Skylynn, and Annie.  Their older offspring, sons Carter and Will, live in Nashville, TN and Lexington, KY, respectively.
