Name: Toby Yurek

Current Status: Alumni

Graduation Year: 1995

When Toby Yurek (BA ’95) first entered Pacific Christian College, he had plans to become a pastor. But as he approached his final months of school, God laid a different calling on his heart – law enforcement. He has now been with the Henderson (Nevada) Police Department for over 15 years and has not looked back. He started out as a police officer and has worked his way up to Lieutenant of the Criminalistics Bureau, which includes crime scene investigations and the crime lab.

He went back to school to further his education and graduated from Boston University in 2002 with a Masters in Criminal Justice, and a Juris Doctorate from the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 2008. Through the combination of his law enforcement experience and legal expertise, Yurek then opened up a part-time law practice and now offers legal consulting services and training for law enforcement agencies, as well as legal services for the community.

Yurek feels blessed to be in a job that honors God and that he thoroughly enjoys, “By living the life that God has called me to, God has allowed me to be a ‘light’ in a very dark profession plagued with broken homes, depression and destructive behavior… When I joined the police department, I fully expected to be witnessing to ‘bad guys’ and victims; what I have found over the years is that God’s real work is with the officers themselves. I have had the opportunity to join in God’s activity in the lives of fellow officers and watch them come to Christ, even having the honor of baptizing a few of them.”

When Yurek was asked if his job was like the popular show, CSI, he stated, “Much like the popular TV shows, the job involves a mixture of intuition, technology and luck to develop suspect leads through the identification, collection, preservation and analysis of a wide variety of forensic evidence left behind at crime scenes. While the technologies and techniques typically portrayed in these shows are based in reality, unfortunately we are rarely able to successfully resolve a case neatly within one hour. Needless to say my job is fascinating!”

Yurek and his wife, Carrie (BA '95) met during their freshman year at HIU and are coming up on their 15th anniversary. They have three boys, Thaddeus J. IV, (age 10), and twins Tyler and Trey (age 8). Yurek states that Carrie “remains the love of my life” and that his sons are his best friends.
