HIU's Student Government Association (SGA) organized and hosted our first annual Cancer Awareness Walk to support those affected by cancer, including current SGA President, Jorge Perez. Approximately 100 members of the Hope community -- including family and friends -- came together to raise awareness and pray for cancer patients and their loved ones.
Jorge was diagnosed in May with Stage 4 Diffused Midline Glioma, which is considered terminal brain cancer, and was given approximately one year to live. He has gone through radiation and clinical trials, praying and believing for a miracle. Since his diagnosis, his cancer has progressed rapidly. He is now in hospice with 24/7 care.
Jorge is well known and much loved around the HIU campus. He was on the men's soccer team, a leader at his youth church group, starting his own clothing business, working at Disneyland, and active in HIU's ministry club, The Well. Jorge was getting ready to take on the role of being our SGA President when he went to the ER in March, and his brain tumor was discovered.
A GoFundMe has been created to support Jorge and his family during this incredibly challenging time.
