Experiencing California History & Government Firsthand

Posted: May 1, 2017

Since 1988, students enrolled in Dr. Steve Edgington’s California History & Government course have been part of an ongoing tradition of class trips to San Diego, Northern California, and the Central California Coast. The excursions have featured stops at historical museums, landmarks and the State Capitol. To date, more than 200 alumni carry memories of this rich HIU learning experience.

The 2017 class established a first during its spring visit to the State Capitol when students were able to observe a complete legislative floor debate from the beginning to the final roll call vote. The class witnessed the State Senate debate and vote on the bill to raise gas taxes and vehicle fees to fund $52 billion in infrastructure repairs and improvements over the next 10 years. The bill was subsequently passed by the State Assembly and signed by the Governor.

On the Spring 2017 trip, in addition to the State Capitol in Sacramento, students visited the Gold Discovery site at Coloma, Muir Woods National Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge overlook from the Marin Headlands, San Francisco’s Fort Point, Colton Hall in Monterey, plus the Thomas Larkin House, Pacific House Museum, and Customs House in Monterey, and Hearst Castle in San Simeon.
