Students explore the components of balanced comprehensive literacy in-struction. The research basis of for the provisions of effective literacy teach-ing and learning will be studied. Instructional procedures designed to pro-vide access to the curriculum for all students, regardless of cultural and linguistic backgrounds will be examined. Various components within the course will help prepare candidates for the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA). A minimum of six (6) hours of reading instruction ob-servation in classrooms with students from cultural, linguistic, ethnic, or socioeconomic backgrounds different from that of the teacher credential candidate are required.
