Therapy Opportunities

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a one-on-one session with your therapist. During session, issues concerning relationships, depression, anxiety, stress, work, grief and loss, and self-esteem could be targeted for discussion and processing. In session, the therapist creates a safe non-judgmental environment. The client can improve coping skills needed to effectively deal with daily stresses and life concerns. The client can discover self-defeating patterns of thought and behavior that get in the way and use what they learn to be more successful, comfortable, and happy with themselves, in their relationships and daily living.

Pre-marital Therapy

Pre-marital therapy gives the couple time to explore their relationship and areas of growth. During pre-marital therapy the couple discovers ways to strengthen communication including assertiveness skills and active listening. Topics like household chores, finances, family histories, and children can be explored.

Some of our therapists offer Prepare and Enrich counseling services. Couples fill out an extensive inventory that is scientifically scored and results in a detailed, computerized counselor report. Topics addressed include communication, conflict resolution, family-of-origin, finances, sexuality, spiritual beliefs, and many more. Six feedback exercises have been created to help couples increase self-awareness and build on strengths as they improve their relationship. Please specify when making your appointment for pre-marital counseling you wish to participate in Prepare and Enrich counseling services.

Couple's Therapy

In couple's therapy, the therapist helps the couple rebuild a sense of hope as they do the hard work of dealing with relationship problems. Therapy for couples can help partners make the commitment to try to improve the relationship, deal with past hurts, learn communication skills, and reconnect with each other on multiple levels. During the joint sessions the couple can improve how they relate to each other, deal with money problems and build intimacy. Issues discussed can include dealing with personality traits and behavior, effective parenting, negotiating household tasks and learning to accept one another's extended family.

Family Therapy

Family therapy includes all or most of the members of a family in the therapy process. Because the family has an influence on every member, it can be helpful to focus on the family as a unit instead of just on one individual.

Family therapy can help families work together as a unit to communicate feelings and ideas more effectively, enjoy their time together and develop effective family meetings. The therapist can aid the family in developing coping skills needed in a time of crisis such as family illness, loss of job, or improving blended families. During therapy, the parents can begin to understand and work with the child's personality. Family therapy can give the parents awareness of their parenting strengths and weaknesses and how they act in the relationship. Family therapy can help children learn to communicate more effectively with the family members and strengthen social skills.

Child and Teen Therapy

Therapy for children involves a combination of talk therapy and play therapy. Children may not have developed the ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings, but may act out their concerns when involved in play. The therapist may use art therapy techniques as another means of communication with the child. Play is a meaningful and a significant way for kids to express fears, confusing thoughts, and distressing feelings. Children use toys and figurines; play materials such as clay, Play-Doh and art supplies to say what they are unable to say with words.

Teen or adolescent therapy may look like adult talk therapy with some art and play therapy mixed into the process. In session the therapist will help the client develop coping skills to deal with issues concerning school, parents, relationships, divorce, grief and loss, and self-esteem. The client will develop assertiveness skills needed to cope with stress and teasing at school.
