This course contains an overview of the major literary genre and themes from 1650 to the Modern Era in the literature of Russia, Latin America, Asia, Africa, India, and Western Europe.  Characteristics of The Modern Era in Literature are examined with particular emphasis on the ideologies of Existentialism, and Post-war Realism and Idealism.  Emphasis is placed on the diversity of literary expression within its cultural context, while recognizing the universal themes common to the human experience.
